Telhîsu’l-beyân fî (an) mecâzâti’l-Kurʾân is one of the most popular works written by Serif er-Radi. His works ‘Telhîsu’l-beyân and Mecâzâtu’n Nebeviyye’ are the pioneering original works in this field about the metaphoric uses in the verses and hadith. This work is written by er-Radi in 1011. It is the second extant work along with Ebu Ubeyde’s Mecaz’ul Qur’an. However, unlike Ebu Ubeyde’s work, er-Radi’s mecâzâti’l-Kurʾân is the first work, which analyses the terms such as metaphors, figure of speech, allusion closer to their uses in the field of rhetoric. Indeed, er-Radi stated in the introduction and the concluding remarks that “he wanted to work in a virgin field”. He mentioned that the metaphors of Qur’an have been the subject matter of a work, first time in his book.

This pioneering work has a distinguished position in terms of analysing the language of Qur’an through its literary style.

When we make research on the first period of Islam and Prophet Muhammed’s life, our admiration to his success grows stronger. Being a visionary, a statesman and a ruler... if his confidence in Allah and his firm belief in the Prophetical Call towards him were not present behind these, then a significant portion of human civilization were not to be written. I hope this work of translation will lead to admiration and consideration about one of the greatest man of humankind.

It has been urgently needed, for some while, to write Prophet Mohammed’s life by Islamic studies researchers, who have a historian perspective. This need is deeply rooted in the fact that the interests and attitudes of historians have changed due to their raising awareness about the positive factors in the framework of history. The feature of this book, which is about Prophet Mohammed, is not expressed by its attempt to order the existing sources in a more rigorous manner but in its focus on giving priority to the above-mentioned positive factors and its attempt to answer the questions that have not been asked before.

Bu kitabın amacı, Hz. Muhammed’in risâletinin Mekke dönemiyle ilgili Kur’an’dan olabildiğince fazla tarihsel malzeme elde edebilmektir... Muhammad at Mecca adlı kitabımda Kur’an’dan hatırı sayılır oranda yararlandım. Muhammed’in dinî gelişimini yeniden değerlendirme fırsatı sunmaktadır.”

“Ben şahsen, Hz. Muhammed’in, kendisine vahiy olarak gelen şeyin kendi bilincinin ürünü olmadığına inanmakta samimi olduğuna ikna oldum. Hz. Muhammed’in gerçekten bir peygamber olduğu kanaatindeyim ve biz hıristiyanların, ‘Onları meyvelerinden tanırsın’ anlamındaki hıristiyan prensibi gereğince bunu kabul etmeleri gerektiğini düşünüyorum. Çünkü asırlar boyunca İslam birçok aziz ve mübarek insanlar yetiştirmiştir.”
