Opportunities, Limits and Issues in Historicism for Understanding Qur’an

The speaker of the conference, which was held by KURAMER on 10 April 2015, was Professor Mustafa ÖZTÜRK, from Cukurova University Divinity Faculty. The title of the conference, to which many academics from various fields attended, was “Opportunities, Limits and Issues in Historicism for Understanding Qur’an”.

Professor Öztürk began his speech as follows: “Qur’an and historicism has been an accident-prone issue in Turkey. I will attempt to address the issues surrounding the extent to which historicism contributes us in understanding Qur’an, where its limits its problems lay, and the time when these discussions began”.

He resumed his speech by indicating that it would be useful to summarize the background of this discussion in Turkey. The period 1995-1996 was quite hectic for the controversies between Islam and Modernism. Faz’ul Rahman, who has been considered as the father of historicism issue in Turkey and referred in almost every discussion in this issue, categorizes Islamic modernists in a critical manner in his several articles. It is quite interesting that we still use these different concepts (historicism and modernism) interchangeably, as if they were identical. The controversy has been initiated by the circles in Ankara Theology Faculty.”

“What is historicity? I have to state that this is not a methodology in understanding Qur’an. Historicity is a perspective, a point of view and an approach. Does its area of interest cover Qur’an wholly or partially? To me, it is not limited to the verses of judgment. I hold the idea that historicism is also about the issues surrounding the nature of God and being a prophet.” According to Professor Öztürk, when Qur’an is viewed from the point of the view of historicism, the conception of historicism looks similar to Mute’zile’s work Halk’ul Kalam.

Professor Öztürk ended his speech by stating that historicism was expressed through reasoning but unless this issue is tackled with reference to Fiqh and Tafsir sources, this issue will remain unsolved.

At the end of the conference, there was a Q&A session, where the topic was analysed further in detail.
