Guidelines For Publication

RULES AND PRINCIPLES OF KURAMER’S WRITING PROCESS

1. GENERAL PRINCIPLES AND GUIDELINES

2. RULES FOR THE SPECIFIC SUBJECT AREAS

3. COMMON LITERATURE

4. TRANSCRIPTION AND COMMON ORTHOGRAPHY

GENERAL PRINCIPLES AND GUIDELINES

1. The six main sections and their sub-themes that are “oriented towards conducting a contextual study for the correct understanding of the Quran” and that constitute the first stage of our Center’s academic work are to be written with the objective of building a sound basis for the understanding of the Quran. The content of the texts produced is to be in line with this goal.

2. All information provided should be properly cited to include the original source.

3. Researchers in all subjects should be aware and informed of alternative perspectives and subject them to an evaluation when they deem necessary. All information and resources within reach should be taken into consideration regardless of the school of thought and/or sect they originate from.

4. The primary goal should be to understand the texts without interpretation and as correctly as possible. The originals of texts and sources of critical importance should be supplied. Texts will be interpreted if and to the extent that interpretation is deemed necessary for correct understanding.

5. Within classical Islamic literature, sources written at earlier dates will be preferred to the ones written later.

6. Early linguistic works in the fields of lexicography and tafseer will be preferred to subsequent works, and opinions and interpretations based on modern scientific data will be evaluated and inquired with caution.

7. Secondary sources and translated works that are directly or indirectly relevant to the subject in hand should not be included as sources before their references are thoroughly examined.

8. Modern Turkish and non-Turkish authors’ works about the subject should be examined; however, they should not be used as sources before ascertaining the value of their references and ensuring the precision of translation.

9. Researchers should always be fully informed of orientalist literature on their subject, but the sources and their use in these works should definitely be investigated.

10. While evaluating the data and information provided by modern scientific research, the most recent works – unless demanded otherwise by the situation – should be prioritized and emphasized.

11. Academic freedom and scholarly authenticity are priorities. No piece of work can be published without the definitive authorization of its author.

RULES FOR THE SPECIFIC SUBJECT AREAS

1. The final titles and sub-titles of the study, as well as the plans for each section, will mature parallel to the writing process under the guidance of the head of each committee.

2. Researchers in every subject area will primarily identify and classify the relevant literature. The identification of relevant literature in Quranic Studies and related fields and their procurement either in print or digital format is underway in our Center.

3. Researchers working within a subject area will always be able to request the sources they need from the Center and these requests will be met as much as the facilities permit.

4. The committee responsible for each subject area will report to the Center at regular intervals. These reports will specify the final point reached in research and comment on the particular issues, recommendations, and needs the committee might have. The writing process and these reports will be discussed in the workshops and work sessions of the committees.

5. When the academic team of a particular subject area deems it necessary to put on a workshop or a conference, KURAMER will take this recommendation into consideration.

6. The orthography rules and transcription system determined by KURAMER will be used in all published material.

COMMON LITERATURE

1. The citation format to be used in tafseerstudies has to be common. The software which all KURAMER researchers and authors can use to format their references and bibliographies and which also includes a great majority of the classical literature is ready for use. This software, which can also be used online, will be made available to all our researchers.

2. Sources that are not in the common literature will be used within academic guidelines.

TRANSCRIPTION AND COMMON ORTHOGRAPHY

1. All of the publications of the Center for Quranic Studies will be in accordance with the KURAMER transcription system and orthography rules. A transcription keyboard software is being prepared in accordance with this system, which will be made available to our researchers once it is complete.

2. All of our publications will be in 12 pt Times New Roman font, with 1.5 line spacing.

3. The originals of important references and fundamental phrases will be included in the texts. The translations will be in italic Latin characters to set them aside from the originals.
